LEGENDS OF SURFBOARD
SHAPING |
 |
| |
BoardRoom
features the greatest legends of modern
board shaping. We hear first hand on how
they got started, who gave them a break
and how they changed surfing history forever.
We hear about the transition from balsa
to foam , from long board to short board,
from California to Hawaii. Get ready for
a trip back in time to the beginning of
modern day shaping.

Shapers come and go and come back again. Takayama has been hard at it since
the middle-50s from Hawaii to
California and back again. with
very few detours. Takayama claims
some fine names as shaping influences:
Dale Velzy, Renny Yater Pat
Curren, Mike Diffenderfer, Ken
Tilton, Hap Jacobs, Joe Quigg,
His first surfboard was a redwood
in Hawaii, around 1948. Where
did he get the redwood? "Railroard
tracks," Takayama said.
"They were changing railroad
ties and had all these old ones
on the side of the road and
so I went over there and helped
myself to it."

Beyond the creative
minds who shaped an industry
in the shaping room, we will
also feature the men behind
the lens, who brought the sport
to the news stands and into
every household around the world.
